Is This Our Wake-Up Call?
This week I was deeply saddened by the news of Kate Spade’s death. Her motto to “Live Colorfully” and her design aesthetic have been a great source of inspiration to me. That and headlines like: “A ‘Wake-up Call’ About What’s Killing America’s Youth,” really tug at my heart. Understanding what’s happening to our youth matters, whether you’re a parent of tots, tweens or teens. A glimpse into the future can be helpful in how we parent today.
Reportedly young adults ages 18-24 are lonelier today, and alarmingly, the rate of suicide has increased by 56% between 2007 and 2016. It is now the second leading cause of death among teens.
There are three prevailing theories about what is affecting this age group. The first two are the usual suspects: social media and smartphones, but the third calls us to think more deeply about whether we’ve become so achievement-oriented that our kids are missing out on true connection. Rachel Simmens, Co-Founder of Girls Leadership, suggests that instead of investing in friendship, young people are too busy moving from one activity to the next, feeling pressured to build their résumés.
Maybe if we’re going to have summer goals, they’re geared more towards bonding opportunities. My daughter’s already challenged me to learn fishtail braiding and has recruited her sister to teach her how to use Heely’s. Happy Summer!
With best wishes,
